Built in Belfast, RMS Titanic was the second of a trio of Olympic-class luxury ships. Owner was the shipping company White Star Line. On the night of April 14-15, 1912, on its maiden voyage, the Titanic collided with an iceberg shortly before midnight: part of the starboard side was pierced in several places, and within three hours the ship was sunk. 1522 people on board perished. Although this is not the largest maritime disaster in history by number of victims, it is the most famous, mainly because the ship was known to be unsinkable. In 1985, the wreck was recovered under the direction of Robert Ballard, revealing much information about the ship and its fatal voyage. Three large ship parts and a quantity of smaller remains lie at the bottom of the ocean at a depth of 3,800 meters. An investigation was published on August 21, 2019. The researchers discovered that large parts of the ship disappeared due to a metal-eating bacteria. Experts believe that nothing will be left of the shipwreck in 20 to 30 years.
